Colony Size

They're large, they're fast growing, they're bombastic, Liometopum luctuosum. With massive colonies in the hundreds of thousands of workers, if they're in the area you're going to find out sooner or later especially with their massive trails. Their large monogynous queens will be sent out in the thousands during nuptial flights, and will found with dozens of nanitics, one of their most defining features. Workers will collect all sorts of sugary liquids and insects, ranging from small fruit flies to large beetles. They're well loved in Canada, and as a result can be a bit pricey. Not often known is that they actually exhibit a large extent of polymorphism, with distinct majors, larger ants, and distinct minors, smaller ants.

Liometopum luctuosum have brown-gray queens and workers from 10-12 mm and 4-6 mm respectively. Though closely related to the species Liometopum occidentale, they can be separated by their more flat colouration.

This species is not the best pick for beginners. Take care to make sure they have access to sugars at all times, but other than that they are very good at thriving. Perhaps too much, which gets to the main problem with them. With fast growth rates and large colonies, they can get out of control. They will escape eventually no matter what, but this can be mediated with Fluon or other escape preventing barriers.

What's a Test Tube Insert?

Test tube inserts are upgrades to the test tube setups provided. If purchased, they come with a dark hood to lower light levels for the colony, an insert which provides a living space, and a feeding insert to provide food for the colony.

Ungrouted inserts are a blank plastic insert which helps provide a more suitable space for the ants to grip (as opposed to glass tubes), while grouted inserts are bedded with a substrate which helps distribute humidity more evenly throughout the test tube, and helps certain ants create their cocoons more easily. Overall, grouted inserts are more comfortable for the ants.

You will NOT need an insert for colonies in test tubes, but it does help for certain species. IF you are moving the ants into a nest immediately, do NOT get a test tube insert.

Any order with a unacceptable mortality rate, but with a viable colony (e.g. less workers than in the range advertised, less queens or workers than advertised) can be compensated with store credit equal to the loss of value in the shipment, including shipping and extra packaging. Any order with DOAs, but which do not fall out of the initially advertised/promised range of workers will NOT be compensated.

DOA claims which are a total loss will be re-shipped 1 more time FREE of charge with photographic evidence. DURING THE WINTER MONTHS WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO HOLD BACK SHIPMENTS IF WE DECIDE ITS TOO COLD TO SHIP.

Please note that orders to outdoor community mail boxes, or other outdoor locations void our live guarantee. If your address consists of an outdoor mail box or location, please make arrangements to have the order delivered to a friends house, or to your place of employment.
