I will be a bit clear here, Sunburst™ Ant Nectar is not a necessity for your colony. However, I will have to add that it contains many of the nutrients which you wouldn't get in other sources. e.g. salt.
As a matter of fact, I once kept a colony of Bradley's Field Ants going for months on Sunburst and neglect alone. I do believe it is better than any current other sugar solution on the market.
