WARNING: THESE ANTS ARE NOT FOR BEGINNERS. COLONIES SHOULD ONLY BE PURCHASED IF YOU CAN PERIODICALLY SUPPLY THE COLONY WITH FORMICA PUPAE.
Polyergus mexicanus is the most common slave making ant in north america, and can be found throughout the western half of the continent.
They are obligate slave raiders that cannot perform nessecary tasks such as brood care, foraging or even feeding themselves. Their only goal is to steal the pupae of formica species which they will raise as their slaves
. Polyergus colonies can grow very large, having over 1500 workers and 6000 slaves. Giving the colony more slaves increases their growth speed and is overall healthier for the colony.
In captivity, polyergus are easier than most social parasites to get past the founding stage, as they aren't usually prone to sudden deaths. However, they require large amounts Formica pupae to sustain regularly in captivity
