Solenopsis geminata, or the Tropical Fire Ant, is a highly active and fast-growing fire ant that makes an exciting addition to any serious ant collection. Known for its striking reddish coloration, aggressive foraging, and impressive seed-harvesting behavior, this species can quickly develop into a large and highly active colony. It is an excellent choice for keepers looking for a more energetic species with plenty of activity to observe.
Solenopsis geminata is a widespread New World fire ant found throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, as well as many other warm regions where it has been introduced. Unlike many other fire ants, Solenopsis geminata is particularly well adapted to harvesting seeds, which form an important part of its diet. Workers collect and process seeds inside the nest, where they can be stored and used as a food source for the colony.
These ants are highly active and fast growing, making them an exciting species to watch as the colony develops. Colonies have multiple worker sizes, with workers ranging from approximately 2 to 6mm and queens reaching around 7mm. Like other fire ants, they can be defensive when disturbed and are capable of delivering a painful sting, so they should be handled with care.
As a tropical species, Solenopsis geminata does not require hibernation and should be kept warm year-round. A temperature of approximately 25–30 degrees Celsius is recommended, with moderate humidity around 50–70%.

This species comes from more tropical areas than Canada, and are not cold-tolerant. Thus, we will not ship them in the winter
