Lasius latipes (Wide-Legged Citronella Ant)
Lasius latipes (Wide-Legged Citronella Ant)
Lasius latipes is part of the subgenus Acanthomyops, or citronella ants. these ants are characterized by the citronella smell they produce when distubred, as well as their subterranean habits. Members of Acanthomyops are yellow-orange, have small eyes, and farm root aphids. However, they also seem to be able to accept the same food as other ant species. Members of this group are seldom reared successfully, but they can otherwise be founded the same way as other parasitic Lasius. These ants are not for beginners. Lasius latipes queens have two morphs, and is famous for the tank-like bodies that the alpha-group queens have, though beta-group queens have proportions closer to most other Acanthomyops Lasius.
