Lasius claviger is part of the subgenus Acanthomyops, or citronella ants. these ants are characterized by the citronella smell they produce when distubred, as well as their subterranean habits. Members of Acanthomyops are yellow-orange, have small eyes, and farm root aphids. However, they also seem to be able to accept the same food as other ant species. Members of this group are seldom reared successfully, but they can otherwise be founded the same way as other parasitic Lasius. These ants are not for beginners. Lasius murphyi are noted for their strange-looking queens, but their workers look similar to other Acanthomyops Lasius.
